This ritual was celebrated during Christmas Week in Santa Fe, NM. Church goers carried a little  carving of Mary on a donkey with  Joseph. They would go door to door and ask for shelter. The time I saw it, the people involved in this live play also had two guitarists that sang along in Spanish when they stopped.
